Social Media

Social media and the attention economy

We need to say this out loud: Social media is an industry built on attention, addiction, and profit.

I am tired of watching young children gain access to content no child should see. I am tired of watching young people lose confidence, motivation, and attention while algorithms grow richer. I am tired of watching capable professionals struggle to focus. I am tired that older adults are fed fear and outrage because outrage keeps people scrolling. I am tired of a culture that celebrates billionaire status while ignoring the social cost paid by families and communities.

Research is raising alarms. Other nations are putting guardrails in place. This isn’t anti-technology. It’s pro-human. Attention is being sold. Childhood is being shortened. Algorithms are getting richer. Technology should serve people. People should not be serving technology. I will join if elected with those at the Utah Capitol who are willing to stand up and stand out.

We know better. Research is clear. States need to act now. Utah can lead the way.
